Protect your electronic devices from power surges
Practical advice on how to protect your tech from power surges, what to do when you know that the power may be cut and how to keep your devices safe.

Problem

Last summer we experienced several thunderstorms that resulted in power outages with more than 3,000 customers in Falls Church left without power. This is an inconvenient and stressful situation in itself but also it may bring unexpected consequences afterwards such as your computer or appliances being fried.

Solution

Fortunately, that is easy to prevent and in preparation for this summer's storms, we have a couple of easy and efficient recommendations.

  1. We recommend installing an APC wall-mounted surge protector for unprotected outlets. This small surge protector is screwed into the power outlet, covering or replacing the power outlet’s original faceplate. In this photo, you can see a similar surge protector mounted on my kitchen wall. Look at how small it is!
  2. Backup your data regularly! Make sure that all important data is backed up to an external drive or cloud service. Regular backups can prevent data loss in case of hardware damage.
  3. Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) for critical devices like computers, modems, and routers may save the day. A UPS provides temporary power and allows you to shut down devices properly in case of a power cut.

Remember, safety should be your top priority during a storm. If you're concerned about your devices, it's always better to disconnect and protect them rather than risk damage.
